Alumna Jill Cook named executive director of American School Counselor Association

Jill M. Cook, an alumna of the School of Education’s school counseling program, has been named to become the next executive director of the American School Counselor Association. Cook (’88, B.M.Ed., ’91, M.Ed.), who currently serves as ASCA’s assistant director, brings nearly 30 years of experience in K–12 education and school counseling to the position, including 19 years of service at ASCA. After earning a bachelor’s degree in music education and her master’s degree in school counseling, Cook worked as an assistant principal at the elementary and middle school level and a middle school counselor prior to joining ASCA in 2001.

 

Doctoral student Megan Griffard named finalist for Odum Institute Symposium

Megan Rauch Griffard, a third-year PLS Ph.D. student, has been selected as a finalist for the Odum Institute’s Thomas M. Carsey Graduate Student Symposium, an event highlighting graduate student work across the University. The event will take place asynchronously beginning Oct. 2.

 

FPG hosting Wednesday talk on supporting youth with ASD

The Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute will host a talk on Wednesday entitled “Supporting Youth with ASD and their Families During the Transition to Adulthood.” The talk will be given by Leann Smith DeWalt. It’s part of the lecture series “Fostering Resilience for Our Children: From Birth to Adolescence.” Register for the 3 p.m. talk at http://go.unc.edu/dawalt

 

HDFS sponsoring Friday showing of documentary about transgender athletes

The Human Development and Family Studies program is hosting a showing and discussion of a documentary film about transgender student-athletes. The film — “Changing the Game” — will be shown Friday at 7 p.m. It will be followed by a discussion with the producer, Alex Schmider. All are invited to attend. Details about how to watch the film have been emailed to students, faculty and staff.
