Shauna Harris selected to be assistant dean for student affairs

Shauna Harris, who has worked in student and academic affairs for the past decade, has been selected as the School of Education’s new assistant dean for student affairs. She starts work at the School on Aug. 31. Harris was selected after a thorough search that attracted a substantial number of applications. Harris joins the School after serving for the past three and a half years as associate director for student life and leadership at UNC-Chapel Hill’s Carolina Union. She earned a B.A. in history at Clemson University. She earned an M.Ed. in higher education and student affairs from the University of South Carolina and a Ph.D. in counseling and student personnel services from the University of Georgia.


DEI listening sessions scheduled for Tuesday, Friday

The next listening session hosted by Dana Griffin, the Dean’s Fellow for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. The sessions are offered to allow community members to share concerns and input that will be used in forming a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion plan for the School of Education. Invitations are sent out to community members via email. Another DEI listening session will be held Friday at 3 p.m. Watch for emailed Zoom invites.


Information session on Thursday for undergraduate programs

An information session has been scheduled for students interested in the School of Education’s undergraduate programs. The event is being held on Thursday. Recruitment Director Trish Harris will offer details about the Human Development and Family Studies, K-12 Music Education, UNC-BEST, Minor in Education, and Pre-MAT programs. ‘Online Teaching Course Tune Up’ offered on Friday

Paul Wolff, instructional design manager of digital and life long learning at UNC, will offer an “Online Teaching Course Tune Up” on Friday. The session will share tips and strategies for online teaching best practices. The event will be held from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. A link to the Zoom session was emailed out by Caroline Weaver.


In the Media: Dana Griffin interviewed by ABC11

Faculty member Dana Griffin was interviewed by ABC11 after a tweet of hers went viral. Griffin tweeted that on her first day of class after going remote, she did a check-in on how her students were faring … and ended up spending the entire class time in those talks.


In the Media: Dana Riger interviewed for Roanoke Times

Faculty member Dana Riger was interviewed for a Roanoke Times story about the challenges universities face during the pandemic.


In the Media: Daniel Klasik cited in Arkansas newspaper regarding college admissions

Faculty member Daniel Klasik was interviewed for a story in the Arkansas Democrat Gazette in a story about college admissions processes. The story described the decision by the University of Arkansas to begin using the Common Application.


Alumni named finalists for Wake County principal, assistant principal of the year

Alumni Annice Williams (’93 A.B.Ed., ’98 M.S.A., ’05 Ed.D.) and Elena Ashburn (’12 M.S.A., ’18 Ed.D.) were named finalists for Wake’s Principal of the Year. Catie Burnette (’10 A.B.Ed.) was named a finalist for Assistant Principal of the Year.

Kristin Papoi gave a presentation entitled “Sensemaking through Art-Making: Fostering Emergent Bilingual Content Understanding through Purposeful Talk: Whoever Talks the Most, Learns the Most” at the “Working with Latin American Immigrants” professional development event organized by the Institute of the Study of the Americas earlier this month.
